As a lead product design consultant at Apple, I had the opportunity to contribute significantly to the development of the Apple Watch Generation 1 and Apple TV Generation 2. This case study outlines the unique challenges, innovative approaches, and rewarding results from my journey along side the Apple Evangelists (Engineers), offering an inside look into the world of technological innovation.

The Challenge

The development of the Apple Watch Generation 1 presented a unique challenge: adapting a user interface (UI) designed for the large screen of an iPhone to the considerably smaller display of a wrist-worn device. This marked the first time Apple was developing an operating system, watchOS, for such a compact surface. Additionally, we needed to ensure popular apps like QVC, Uber, Mattel, and Nike were optimized for a seamless user experience on the new platforms, preserving their core functionality despite the shift in display size.

The Approach

The journey began at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, where I collaborated with Apple Evangelists and other team members under a veil of secrecy. Given the sensitivity of the project, we were not to speak about our work outside of the lab and even had escorts throughout the Apple campus to ensure we upheld this principle.

As a part of this collaborative approach, I played a significant role in developing new UI patterns that were intuitive yet suitable for a smaller screen. I also participated in building apps and conducting real-time quality assurance for watchOS and tvOS, working closely with engineers to identify, report, and fix bugs, thereby ensuring the new products met Apple's high standards.

The Results

Through this meticulous and secretive approach, we successfully created an intuitive user interface for the Apple Watch that echoed the iPhone's features on a much smaller screen. We also enhanced the accessibility features of both the Apple Watch and Apple TV, making these products more inclusive. Collaborating with Apple app engineers and other team members, we ensured that popular apps were optimized for Apple's platforms, providing a seamless user experience.

The Conclusion

My time as an Apple Lab Consultant was an unforgettable experience that provided me with exclusive access to the latest hardware and software. Every time I watch a show or glance at my watch, I am reminded of the honor it was to contribute to shaping the future of Apple products. This journey not only affirmed Apple's commitment to innovation, accessibility, and delivering the best possible experience to its customers but also offered a unique insight into the company's protective culture surrounding its product secrets.
